Xbox Cloud Gaming vs Shadow PC: which should you choose?
Check Xbox Cloud Gaming for games in an eligible Game Pass cloud catalogue. Consider Shadow PC when you need to install PC games and software yourself. Budget for the games and setup as well as the subscription.

| What matters | Xbox Cloud Gaming | Shadow PC |
|---|---|---|
| Games | Eligible cloud catalogue and selected owned games | Your own PC games and licences |
| Setup | Supported app or browser and input device | A Windows desktop with installs and updates |
| Compatibility check | Cloud listing, plan and region | Windows requirements and cloud-PC restrictions |
| Costs to count | Subscription, separate games and future extra-hour terms | PC subscription, games and any storage add-on |
Start with what you already pay for
If you have Game Pass, check whether your existing plan includes cloud play before buying another subscription. If you own PC games, check their licences and compatibility on Shadow.
Console ownership isn't a blanket PC licence. Check the edition, purchase entitlement and save transfer for the game you care about. Moving to a different machine is annoying enough without discovering that your purchase or progress doesn't follow you.
Xbox Cloud Gaming: check the games included with your plan
The Xbox cloud catalogue is the first check if you like trying different games. Make sure the games you want are available to stream on your plan. Download access and cloud access aren't interchangeable.
If most of your time goes into one game, its availability matters more than the catalogue size. Look at the plan comparison only after that game check. PC Game Pass alone doesn't include cloud play.
Shadow PC: for a Windows setup you manage yourself
Shadow makes sense to investigate when you need a desktop, specific launchers or other Windows tools alongside your games. You install and manage that setup yourself.
Price the storage before signing up. Your install list needs room for updates, and additional storage costs extra. Also check incompatible games, especially anything using anti-cheat. Don't pay for a cloud PC that can't run your main game.

Write down the full monthly bill
Use this worksheet for each option: renewal subscription + games you still need to buy + required storage + extra playtime where available. Keep a temporary discount separate from the normal renewal bill.
Xbox has announced monthly cloud limits starting in November 2026; extra-hour prices are not yet announced. Those are future changes as of 28 September, so don't treat them as today's limits or invent a price for a month of heavy streaming.
Shadow's offers page lists its own current usage limits and introductory prices. Compare the renewal amount and allowance for the actual plan you're considering.
If both options support your game, try the device and controller you'll actually use. Our Xbox guide and Shadow guide explain the individual checks.
Before switching
- Can I install all my Xbox purchases on Shadow?
- Don't assume so. Check whether your purchase includes a Windows PC licence for that edition and whether the game works on Shadow.
- Is either option unlimited?
- Check the specific plan. Shadow publishes usage limits, and Xbox has announced changes for November 2026. An unlimited assumption is a poor basis for a long subscription.
